Reads Worth Your Time
One day, in the distant future, you’ll have time to read again. You’ll have time to chillax with a good romance novel and drift away with the scandalous characters.
But now, you’re in survival mode. Any reading done is probably the result of your google search “why won’t my 7 week old nap” or “is this green poop normal”. So I rounded up my top “help make my life easier” baby related books. These books helped shape me into a confident mom. They helped me get our family on the same page and gave me predictability.
1. Baby Wise, for all things scheduling
Baby Wise is an old school book that still helps new school Moms. It’s practices are tried and true and work like a charm. Although I didn’t follow every single thing to a T, the gist of the book is exactly what I needed. The thing I liked the most was probably the example schedules for baby’s feeding and sleeping. It feels like every thing you read says something like, “…every baby is different”. This gave my Type-A brain something to go off of. Start and finish. Beginning and end. And I needed that black and white format. This book will walk you through giving your baby the gift of a schedule. You’ll learn what’s best for babe during each week. When to feed/nurse, wake times, sleep times, and when to put baby to bed so you can go have your glass of wine, or three depending on the day.
2. Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child, sleep training
This books is definitely for the thorough thinkers. Packed full of research based information, it was definitely a skim kinda book for me. But each skim was worth it! This gives you tons and tons of options when it comes to methods of sleep training. So if you’re on the fence about letting them cry it out (like I was), then you’ll get a lot from this book. And don’t fear, I cried like a big baby on the edge of my bed while I let my oldest cry for the first 3 min. It’s normal. Doesn’t crying it out apply to Moms too? But, I wasn’t crying when he was sleeping completely through the night at 9 weeks old. Just sayin’.
3. The Wonder Weeks, mental leaps and development
One day your perfect little angle is going to wake up fussy, clingy, and totally out of sorts. Before you think, “what the F is wrong with my kid?!?!”, look to this resource. Chances are your bundle of joy is going through a “mental leap”. As baby’s brain develops it goes through a series of leaps. These leaps mean great things for you and little tyke because he/she is changing, learning, and growing. But remember growing pains as a kid? Remember that weird leg pain? This is kinda like that but for the brain. These shifts cause babies to be clingy, suuuuuper fussy, and just off. Knowing when these puppies are coming really helps. I feel like some sort of forewarning helps a great deal. In addition to this, the book gives all the info you need to help your prince or princess through the leap. And guess what? There’s an app for that. Life. Changing.
4. The New Father: Dad’s Guide to the First Year, for Daddy-O
With all the focus on Mom and baby, Dada seems to get lost in the shuffle. Don’t worry Papa Bear, there are lots of resources out there for you too. This book balances humor with practicality, giving Dad tips and tricks to surviving with a new baby. It also outlines how Mama is feeling during this time. Dudes-a book that helps you understand your lady? I think that’s definitely worth the read.
5. The Happiest Baby on the Block, calming your babe
This. Book. Brings. Life. This book was written by Dr. Harvey Karp and gets praise from pediatricians around the county. Karp’s plethora of information goes over pretty much everything ya need to know. He covers the fourth trimester (yea, that’s a thing… but don’t worry, you’re not still pregnant), 5 S’s to calm your baby (aka stop crying and crying…and crying), colic, evening fussy times…he’s really thought of, and researched, everything. Karp also has amazing videos to show you exactly how to execute his practices. What more could a gal need?
Hang in there Sweet Mama. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Your kids see you as everything they need. You got this!
